2013 Free Reign Double Obverse SBSS Overview

Free Reign Double Obverse SBSS proofs pair two of Silver Bullet Silver Shield’s best-known portraits on a single 1 oz round, with no conventional reverse. Freedom Girl fills one face and the Slave Queen the other, so whichever side turns up, the coin makes the same argument: liberty on one side, rule by crown on the other.

Freedom Girl was the fourth SBSS release and one of the series’ most popular designs. Sculpted by Heidi Wastweet, it reworks Anthony de Francisci’s 1921 Peace Dollar, whose Liberty was modeled on the sculptor’s wife, Teresa. De Francisci’s Liberty wore her hair bound beneath a radiate tiara. Freedom Girl’s hair is loose and windblown, her lips are parted, and her gaze is lifted toward the future. A Trivium tattoo on her shoulder stands for individual thought, free of outside coercion. The single word FREEDOM is the only legend on the face.

The Slave Queen, the third SBSS release, answers the royal effigy carried on Commonwealth silver coinage. The portrait keeps the familiar profile and crown but strips the face to a skull. SBSS described the crown’s three symbols as a poppy blossom for the Opium Wars, a banking-family crest, and an all-seeing eye, all set above a band reading OBEY. The legend turns the wartime slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On” into KEEP CALM AND SLAVE ON.

Free Reign puts the two portraits back to back, and the name plays on “free rein”: freedom unbridled, set against the reign of a crown. Neither face carries a date, denomination, or purity. On serialized proofs, weight and purity appear only on the edge, engraved beside the serial number on a plain band that interrupts the reeding. The round was issued as a limited edition double-obverse proof medallion in a blue velvet presentation case, with a certificate of authenticity marked American Open Currency Standard Approved and signed by Robert J. Gray as Executive Director.

2013 Free Reign Double Obverse SBSS Attribution

The Free Reign Double Obverse SBSS round is attributed to AOCS Mint as issuer on the strength of its own certificate of authenticity, which identifies the piece as a Silver Bullet Silver Shield “Limited Edition Double-Obverse Proof Medallion,” American Open Currency Standard Approved.

The 2013 date is attributed, not struck. A February 2014 collector compilation lists a 2013 Free Reign Proof and a 2014 Free Reign BU under the Rob Gray branch of SBSS. ANACS certifies the issue as an undated medal, labeled Silver Bullet Silver Shield “Free Reign.”

Edition size is not established. The same compilation reports 2,076 proofs as of February 2014, but observed edge serials run well beyond that figure, so total production is undetermined. For production partner attribution, see the AOCS Mint page.

2013 Free Reign Double Obverse SBSS Notes
  • The edge inscription format is “1 oz .999 Ag / NNNN,” engraved on a plain band interrupting the reeding.
  • Observed serials include 0292, 1495, 5163, 6149, and 6197.
  • An ANACS PR69 example, #0292, is accompanied by a certificate bearing the same number.
  • Not every proof surfaces with its certificate; examples are also found in the presentation case alone or loose in capsules.
  • Unserialized BU examples exist and have been sold as “mint error” double obverse strikes. These correspond to the 2014 Free Reign BU listed in the February 2014 compilation.
  • “Free Reign” is the issuer’s own name for the round, printed on its certificate.
  • Free Reign is one of several SBSS double obverse rounds. See also the 2013 Cannabis & Slave Queen Double Obverse SBSS Proof Silver Round, which shares the Slave Queen face, and the 2013 Debt & Death Double Obverse SBSS Silver Round.
