Attribution Notes

Issued by Free Lakota Bank as part of its AOCS-affiliated Lakota Crazy Horse currency series. The round bears the AOCS Approved designation and a reverse copyright inscription of © 2012 RJG (Rob J. Gray, AOCS founder), matching its struck 2012 obverse date. No manufacturer's mark appears on either face. 2012 was the year Mulligan Mint (Dallas, TX) was organized (beginning Feb. 1, 2012) specifically to bring AOCS-affiliated manufacturing in-house; by 2013 Mulligan Mint is the confirmed manufacturer/distributor for this series. No documentation specifically places this 2012 issue on either side of that transition, so Manufacturer/Mint and Distributor are attributed to AOCS Mint, consistent with the 2009 sibling entry, pending discovery of documentation resolving the 2012 handoff more precisely.

2012 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round Overview

The 2012 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round is the fifth annual issue in the Lakota Crazy Horse currency series, a six-year (2008–2013) program issued by Free Lakota Bank of Pine Ridge, South Dakota. Struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the round carries a proof-like finish, with deep mirrored fields set against frosted, high-relief devices on both faces.

The obverse presents a bust portrait identified within the series as Crazy Horse, the Oglala Lakota war leader, set against a radiating sunburst field evoking a feathered headdress. The legend “LAKOTA” arches across the top of the design, and the date “2012” is struck at lower left beside the portrait — a war-paint lightning-bolt stripe runs down the subject’s forehead and cheek, a recurring device across the series’ annual portraits, here rendered by Native American artist Kenneth Ferguson, whose credit is independently corroborated across multiple period dealer listings for the series’ Crazy Horse design.

The reverse depicts a standing American bison beneath the arched legend “CURRENCY OF THE FREE AND INDEPENDENT NATION.” Below the bison, the inscription “WWW.FREELAKOTABANK.COM” identifies the issuing organization, followed by the denomination “FIFTY” rendered in the series’ stylized, pseudo-runic typeface. The lower legend reads “ONE OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER,” and the round closes with “AOCS APPROVED · © 2012 RJG” — the AOCS Approved designation paired with a copyright line crediting Rob J. Gray, founder of the American Open Currency Standard (AOCS). Unlike the 2009 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round, whose reverse die carried a prior-year 2008 copyright, this round’s reverse copyright matches its struck 2012 obverse date — indicating a currently-dated reverse die was in use by this point in the series’ run.

2012 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round Attribution

No manufacturer’s mark identifying a specific contract mint appears on either face of this round; the “AOCS APPROVED · © 2012 RJG” inscription confirms AOCS Collection membership and credits Rob Gray as the program’s founder, but does not itself identify a striking facility. Per the site’s evidentiary standard, Manufacturer/Mint is recorded here as AOCS Mint, consistent with the attribution used on the 2009 sibling entry and reflecting the program’s established pre-2012 manufacturing arrangement. Mulligan Mint is flagged as a documented alternative candidate specific to this transition year: Gray and Pozderac began organizing the mint on February 1, 2012 explicitly to bring AOCS manufacturing in-house, and by 2013 it is the confirmed manufacturer/distributor for the series. No source pins this specific 2012 issue to one side of that handoff, so the AOCS Mint attribution here should be read as the more conservative, not the more certain, of the two candidates.

Issuer is recorded as Free Lakota Bank, consistent with the organization’s documented role as the currency program’s operator across all years of the series. Distributor is recorded as AOCS Mint, mirroring the reasoning applied to the 2009 entry — a broader documented AOCS Mint distribution pattern for the pre-Mulligan era rather than a source naming this specific round.

Designer/Sculptor/Engraver is recorded as Kenneth Ferguson. While no struck credit appears on the round itself, Ferguson’s authorship of the series’ Crazy Horse portrait is corroborated across multiple independent period dealer listings (APMEX, JM Bullion, Provident Metals, JFV Coins) describing the same design, including a JFV Coins listing specifically for the 2012-dated issue — treated here as sufficient corroborating research, consistent with the confirmed credit already carried on the 2013 sibling entry.

2012 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round Notes

  • Fifth annual issue in the six-year (2008–2013) Lakota Crazy Horse currency series.
  • Proof-like strike, with mirrored fields set against frosted, high-relief devices.
  • Reverse die bears a 2012 copyright date matching the struck 2012 obverse date — unlike the 2009 entry, where the reverse copyright lagged a year behind the obverse date.
  • AOCS Approved designation present on the reverse, establishing AOCS Collection membership independent of manufacturer uncertainty.
  • 2012 falls within the AOCS Mint–to–Mulligan Mint manufacturing transition; see Attribution above.
  • Compare to the 2009 Free Lakota Bank Proof-Like Silver Round (earlier AOCS Mint era) and the 2013 Free Lakota Bank Silver Round (confirmed Mulligan Mint era).
