The 2010 Barter is Better Buy Local AOCS Copper Round is a one-avoirdupois-ounce .999 fine copper trade piece issued under the American Open Currency Standard, the Frisco, Texas–based program founded by Rob Gray to move everyday commerce onto metal. Unlike the portrait and allegorical designs that dominate the AOCS catalog, this round carries no figure at all. It is a pure message piece — a slogan coin whose entire purpose is to advertise the barter network it was meant to circulate within.

The dated side, treated here as the obverse under site convention, is dominated by three stacked lines of bold sans-serif capitals reading “BARTER IS BETTER,” with the web address “WWW.AOCSBARTER.COM” set in smaller serif letters directly beneath. A horizontal rule separates the slogan from a large stylized “TWO,” rendered in a swept, italic-block style that echoes the denomination lettering found across other AOCS copper of the period. Below a second rule sits the weight and metal statement “ONE AV OUNCE .999 FINE COPPER,” and the lower rim carries the AOCS acceptance legend “AOCS APPROVED • ©2010 RJG.” The “AV” is worth pausing on: the piece is denominated in an avoirdupois ounce (28.35 g), not a troy ounce (31.1 g), a distinction AOCS copper routinely made and one that separates these rounds from the troy-ounce standard used for silver.

The struck legend “AOCS APPROVED • ©2010 RJG” anchors this round to the American Open Currency Standard and dates it to 2010 with no need for inference. The “RJG” copyright is attributed to Rob J. Gray, founder and executive director of AOCS, following the same reading applied to the 2009 John Galt AOCS Silver Round and other RJG-marked issues of this era. The design credit in the ACF table therefore follows the copyright holder; whether Gray personally executed the artwork or commissioned it is not documented.

The physical manufacturer is not identified on the coin. AOCS was an approval and issuing program, not a striking facility, and the AOCS Mint page treats the 2009–2011 window as one in which production was contracted to outside mints. North American Mint is the documented production partner for that window at the program level, but no primary source has been located tying this specific round to that facility. The Manufacturer/Mint field is accordingly recorded as attributed, not confirmed.
