2010 d’Anconia Copper AOCS Copper Round Overview

The 2010 d’Anconia Copper AOCS Copper Round is a one-avoirdupois-ounce .999 copper barter piece issued under the American Open Currency Standard and built entirely around Ayn Rand’s Atlas Shrugged. It takes its name from d’Anconia Copper, the fictional mining empire run by Francisco d’Anconia in the novel, and it served as the copper companion to the 2009 John Galt AOCS Silver Round — the two pieces were marketed and sold together so consistently that dealer listings for one routinely bundle or reference the other.

The crossed-picks side presents the d’Anconia Copper company crest: two long-handled mining picks crossed at the center, their curved heads sweeping around the upper field, with the name “d’Anconia Copper” set in a slab-serif face along the lower rim. The opposite side carries the round’s message. “MONEY: THE ROOT OF ALL GOOD” arcs across the top — a deliberate inversion of the familiar proverb and the title collectors give to Francisco’s money speech in the book. Below it sits a dollar sign inside a circle, the sign-of-the-dollar motif Rand used as the emblem of Galt’s Gulch, and beneath that the instruction “READ ATLAS SHRUGGED.” A ruled band then carries the trade value “TWO” in a stylized script, followed by “ONE AV OUNCE .999 COPPER” and, at the bottom, “AOCS APPROVED • © 2010.”

That “TWO” is the piece’s function, not decoration. AOCS assigned a fixed trade value to each metal so that participating merchants could accept rounds at a stated rate rather than spot; copper rounds carried a value of 2, silver carried 50. A period dealer listing for this round lists an “AOCS Trade Value 2” alongside the physical specs, and the round’s contemporaries in the AOCS copper program carry the same figure. This is why the design leans so heavily on the language of money — the round was meant to circulate among Rand readers and AOCS merchants as an actual medium of exchange, and it doubled as an evangelizing tool. The Survival Podcast’s Jack Spirko wrote in October 2010 that he had purchased a hundred d’Anconia coppers to hand out to anyone who had read the book, and used them as the model for his own AOCS copper project with Rob Gray.

The 2010 round should not be confused with the later d’Anconia Copper issues that appeared under the d’Anconia Copper LLC brand from Frisco, Texas. The 2021 version keeps the crossed-picks crest but replaces this reverse with a dollar sign set inside a gear train, ringed by ten repetitions of “TWO,” and carries the legend “DANCONIACU.COM AOCS APPROVED 2021.” Those are distinct pieces from a later phase of the same Rob Gray ecosystem, and they belong in their own entries.

2010 d’Anconia Copper AOCS Copper Round Attribution

The year is struck: “© 2010” appears in the reverse legend, and AOCS practice throughout this era was to strike the issue year as a copyright date, so 2010 is taken as the production year rather than an attributed one. The “AOCS APPROVED” legend places the round squarely within the AOCS program and qualifies it for the AOCS Collection on the strength of the mark itself.

Manufacturer is a different matter. AOCS Mint was the organizational front for the program, not a press, and the round carries no maker’s identification beyond the AOCS mark. The AOCS Mint page documents North American Mint as the program’s production partner for the c.2009–2011 window, which brackets this round’s date. On that basis the manufacturer is recorded as North American Mint, attributed and not confirmed, pending discovery of period sales literature, a COA, or a mint statement tying this specific issue to that facility. The 2009 John Galt silver companion rests on the same attribution.

Distributor is likewise inferred. AOCS sold direct, and the companion John Galt silver medallion traces to ProudProducers.com, an Orlando-based Atlas Shrugged merchandise retailer whose catalog carried a Medallions category and a full line of d’Anconia Copper branded goods. No archived ProudProducers product page for the copper round itself has been located, so ProudProducers is recorded as an attributed secondary distributor on the strength of the bundling pattern, not as a confirmed retail source for this piece.

Designer is unknown. No period source credits the crest or reverse artwork.

• Struck “AOCS APPROVED” qualifies this round for the AOCS Collection.
• Trade value “TWO” is rendered in stylized script; dealers frequently omit or misread it. Compare the 2021 d’Anconia Copper LLC round, which spells the same value out ten times.
• A Survival Podcast comment dated October 2010 refers to buying d’Anconia coppers “a couple of years ago.” No dated pre-2010 example has been located; treat as loose recollection unless an earlier strike surfaces.
• Dealer listings consistently describe the edge as reeded; confirm against the physical example.
• Not a John Galt variety — a separate design sold as the John Galt silver’s copper companion.
