2013 Debt & Death Double Obverse SBSS Silver Round Overview
The Debt & Death Double Obverse is a novelty-format silver round within the Silver Bullet Silver Shield (SBSS) series, pairing the same design — a skeletal figure in top hat and frock coat, encircled by the legend “IN DEBT & DEATH THEY TRUST” — on both faces of the round instead of the standard SBSS crest reverse. The design, credited to Heidi Wastweet, depicts a skeletonized banker framed by five arrows (referencing the Rothschild family crest) bound by a chain, parodying “In God We Trust.”
The “Double Obverse” concept was applied across a rotating cast of SBSS obverse pairings — Trivium, Freedom Girl, Cannabis, Slave Queen, and others — as well as, in this instance, against itself. Several numbered examples of these pairings carry certificates of authenticity signed by Rob Gray.
2013 Debt & Death Double Obverse SBSS Silver Round Attribution
Manufacturer, Issuer, and Distributor are all attributed to Mulligan Mint, Dallas, TX — a vertically integrated facility handling its own production and sales for SBSS output. No mark on this piece confirms this directly; attribution rests on Mulligan Mint’s documented role as SBSS manufacturer/seller.
The design is attributed to the SBSS line by die match — the obverse is the same die used on the standard, crest-marked SBSS Debt & Death release, an attribute of the die’s design rather than a separate struck mark.
No AOCS Approved designation is claimed for this example. Several sibling Double Obverse pairings carry Gray-signed AOCS COAs, which could support an inference that this pairing was produced under the same approval — but that would be an inference from other strikes, not evidence on this piece itself, which carries no mark and no COA of its own. The claim isn’t extended on that basis.
