2007 Texas Hummingbird Silver Dime

Texas Silver Dime Collection

The 2007 Texas Hummingbird Silver Dime is one of four designs in the Texas Silver Dime Collection, a companion series to the Texas Dollar program issued by the Texas Mint of Whitney, Texas. The series highlights wildlife and nature motifs associated with Texas while employing a standardized reverse design used across all dime issues.

Although denominated “10¢,” these privately issued coins were struck at approximately the diameter of a U.S. nickel, larger than a traditional dime. The larger format was intentionally selected so the pieces could be worn as pendant jewelry, making them especially suitable for necklaces.

The hummingbird design celebrates one of the smallest yet most recognizable birds of Texas, frequently seen around gardens, ranch houses, and wildflower fields across the state.

Series Context

The Texas Silver Dime Collection consists of four wildlife-themed designs:

While denominated as dimes, the pieces function primarily as collectible silver rounds and jewelry pieces, complementing the larger Texas Dollar / Texas Silver Dollar series (2000–2009) created by Texas Mint founder Rick Pinner.

Design: Obverse The obverse depicts a hummingbird in flight, captured mid-hover with wings extended and body angled toward an unseen nectar source. The sculpted relief emphasizes the bird’s long beak, compact body, and swept wings, conveying the rapid motion characteristic of hummingbirds. The design is framed by a ring of small denticles near the rim, a border style used across the Texas Silver Dime series. No legends or inscriptions appear on the obverse, allowing the wildlife subject to remain the focal point.
Reverse Image Reverse Image
Design: Reverse The reverse employs the standardized Texas Silver Dime reverse used across all issues in the series. At the center is a large five-pointed Texas star. Within a circular medallion at the center of the star appears the denomination: 10¢ The surrounding legend reads: THE LONE STAR STATE TEXAS arranged around the perimeter of the coin. Below the star appears a small heart motif, a subtle design element incorporated intentionally into many Texas Mint designs as a unifying artistic feature across the Texas Dollar and Texas Silver Dime programs.
