2004 Texas Dragonfly Silver Dime

Texas Silver Dime Collection

The 2004 Texas Dragonfly Silver Dime is a .999 fine silver round issued by Texas Mint and Mercantile in Whitney, Texas as part of the Texas Silver Dime Collection.

Although denominated “10¢,” these privately issued coins were struck at approximately the diameter of a U.S. nickel, larger than a traditional dime. The increased size was intentionally chosen so the pieces could be easily worn as pendant jewelry, particularly for women’s necklaces.

The story of the Texas Dragonfly Dime

“The dragonfly was my special Coin because my wife basically designed it she loved the dragonfly in those days and I just thought it needed a touch of gold on top of the dragonfly so it worked out very well and I made a beautiful Coin.” – Rick Pinner

The design celebrates the dragonfly, a common sight around Texas rivers, ponds, and ranchland stock tanks, symbolizing the state’s abundant freshwater ecosystems. And of course with all of Rick’s designs – the heart motif on the reverse, its a beautiful touch.

The Texas Silver Dime Collection consists of four designs:

  • Dragonfly Dime
  • Horny Toad Dime
  • Quail Dime
  • Hummingbird Dime

Although denominated as dimes, these pieces functioned primarily as collectible silver rounds and jewelry pieces, complementing the larger Texas Dollar / Texas Silver Dollar series (2000–2009) designed by Rick Pinner.

Design: Obverse The obverse features a dragonfly with outstretched wings shown in a top-down view. The insect’s elongated body, segmented thorax, and symmetrical wings are rendered in raised relief, emphasizing the delicate structure characteristic of dragonflies. A ring of small denticles forms a border near the rim, framing the central insect motif. No legends or inscriptions appear on the obverse, allowing the natural subject to dominate the field. The design reflects the Texas Mint’s broader artistic theme of Texas wildlife and natural environments.
Reverse Image Reverse Image
Design: Reverse The reverse uses the standardized Texas Silver Dime reverse shared across the entire series. At the center appears a large five-pointed Texas star. Inside a circular medallion at the center of the star is the denomination: 10¢ The surrounding legend reads:
