1987 State of Texas 1 oz Silver Round (CCM P) Overview

The 1987 State of Texas 1 oz Silver Round (CCM P) is a proof-format variety within the Texas-themed bullion series marketed under the Official Texas Bullion program and produced by Colonial Coins (Houston, Texas). The obverse carries the heraldic composition drawn from the reverse of the State Seal of Texas: the Alamo façade above a segmented shield depicting a cannon, Vince’s Bridge, and flowing water, framed by the Six Flags over Texas behind a wreath of olive and live oak branches. Above the Alamo runs the inscription “REMEMBER THE ALAMO – GOLIAD,” with a Lone Star flanked by “TEXAS” and “SILVER” arched across the top. Below, a banner reads “TEXAS ONE AND INDIVISIBLE,” with the date 1987 struck beneath, flanked by two small stars, and the CCM and P marks struck together to the lower right — the first documented pairing of these two marks on a single die within the series.

The reverse presents the obverse of the State Seal of Texas: a single five-pointed Lone Star encircled by olive and live oak branches, with the inscription “THE STATE OF TEXAS” and, below, “ONE TROY OUNCE .999 FINE SILVER.” The wreath carries the formal, symmetrical seven-acorn, four-olive arrangement documented on the companion 1987 State of Texas 1 oz Silver Round (CCM). Surfaces on the example examined show mirrored fields and frosted devices consistent with a formal proof strike, distinct from a standard bullion finish.

Colonial Coins, founded by Dr. George W. Vogt, operated its Houston coin press in-house during the Texas Sesquicentennial bullion program of the mid-to-late 1980s, striking the State of Texas series alongside its Official Texas Bullion gold issues. Within that program, Colonial Coins used several internal die/press designations — CSM, CM, CCM, and P — documented across the 1986–1991 run of State of Texas rounds. The P mark appears independently as a proof-format variety on the 1988 and 1989 dates, each paired against a “No Mint Mark” business-strike counterpart for the same year. This 1987 piece is the first documented instance of the P mark appearing together with CCM, on a date where CCM has otherwise stood alone.

Manufacturer attribution to Colonial Coins is confirmed independently for both elements of the mark: CCM is an established Colonial Coins press designation, documented via a February 2026 telephone interview with founder Dr. George W. Vogt and eyewitness accounts of striking at the Houston facility, and already carried on the plain 1987 CCM entry. P is likewise an established Colonial Coins designation, confirmed on the 1988 and 1989 proof issues, where the site’s convention reads it as denoting proof manufacture. Struck together on a single date, both marks meet this site’s struck-mark evidentiary standard, and manufacturer attribution here is treated as confirmed rather than inferred.

One open question worth flagging for future research: the existing plain-CCM 1987 entry already notes a “proof-like appearance, with enhanced surface reflectivity compared to standard business strikes” on that die, despite carrying no separate P mark. Whether that earlier-catalogued example represents an unmarked proof-like strike from the same run, or simply reflects natural die freshness, is not resolved by current documentation. This CCM P piece is the only presently known example where the proof finish is confirmed by an explicit struck P mark rather than surface impression alone.

Distributor is attributed to Colonial Coins (Houston, TX) itself, following the pattern documented across the series — Colonial Coins operated as both manufacturer and its own retail/wholesale distribution channel for the Official Texas Bullion program, with no separate third-party distributor identified on any sibling State of Texas Rounds entry.

Mintage for this specific CCM P combination is not documented. Dr. Vogt’s interview recollection that most Colonial Coins issues were produced “in the hundreds rather than thousands” is series-level context, not a piece-specific figure, and is noted here only as background.
