2002 Texas Silver Dollar – Trail Drivers

The obverse depicts a mounted Texas trail driver riding at a steady walk across open prairie. The cowboy is shown in profile, seated upright in the saddle, wearing a broad-brimmed hat, long coat, chaps, and boots. The horse moves forward with its head slightly lowered and reins held loosely in the rider’s left hand, conveying calm control rather than motion or aggression. The ground line is defined by textured grass beneath the horse’s hooves. The date “2002” appears to the right of the horse in raised numerals. The composition is minimalist, with no surrounding legend or border elements, allowing the relief sculpture of the rider and horse to dominate the field. The obverse continues the program’s rotating annual heritage theme, honoring Texas trail driving and cattle movement traditions central to 19th-century Texas history.

The reverse retains the standardized format introduced in 2001 and used throughout the annual Texas Dollar series. A large five-pointed Texas star occupies the center of the design. Within a circular medallion at the center of the star appears a subtle heart motif, intentionally incorporated as a unifying artistic element across the entire series. Surrounding the central star are smaller five-pointed stars arranged along the left and right periphery of the field. The legend “ONE DOLLAR” appears along the upper arc and “TEXAS” along the lower arc in raised serif lettering. Centered beneath the star is the metal designation: A rope-style border encircles the entire design, reinforcing the Western heritage aesthetic consistent across the Texas Dollar program.
