Attribution
The Dor-Tex silver trade unit shares a distinctive scales reverse with documented Don Casey Company, Silvex Silver Systems, and Texas Mint trade units. The reverse appears to represent an earlier version of the design, lacking the “TEXAS MINT” inscription found on later examples.
Because Texas Mint Company was organized in late 1981 and documented Texas Mint pieces appear by 1982, the Dor-Tex issue likely predates adoption of the Texas Mint branding. The reverse die linkage suggests manufacture by the Don Casey operation or a closely related predecessor.
The obverse depicts Texas with a star positioned in the Dallas–Fort Worth region. This location corresponds closely with the corporation’s original Dallas registered office, suggesting the design intentionally references the company’s original business location.
Notes
- No evidence has been located that Dor-Tex operated its own minting facility.
- The company later operated under the assumed name Southwest Coffee Company.
- The silver trade unit remains the only documented numismatic issue presently attributed to Dor-Tex Corp.
- The reverse die provides one of the strongest known links between early unbranded trade units and the later Don Casey / Texas Mint silver trade unit series.
