Overview

The 1993 Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl XXVII Champions silver round was issued to commemorate the Dallas Cowboys’ victory over the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXVII on January 31, 1993. Struck in one troy ounce of .999 fine silver, the round carries officially licensed Dallas Cowboys trademarks and was produced as part of the team’s championship commemorative program. The examined specimen carries edge serial number 8069, indicating large-scale commercial production consistent with a nationally distributed NFL championship commemorative program.

Historical Background

Super Bowl XXVII marked the return of the Dallas Cowboys to the pinnacle of professional football after a fourteen-year championship absence. Under the ownership of Jerry Jones, head coach Jimmy Johnson, and a roster built around quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith, and wide receiver Michael Irvin, the Cowboys had rebuilt rapidly from a 1–15 season in 1989 into the NFC’s dominant team by 1992.

On January 31, 1993, the Cowboys met the AFC champion Buffalo Bills at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. Dallas dominated from start to finish, forcing a then-record nine turnovers and winning 52–17. Aikman completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and four touchdowns and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. The margin of victory was the third-largest in Super Bowl history at the time.

The championship was the Cowboys’ third Super Bowl title and the first of three the franchise would claim in a four-season span, establishing the foundation of the defining NFL dynasty of the 1990s.
