2013 Bitcoin Gold-Plated AOCS Approved Copper Round – Overview
The 2013 Bitcoin Gold-Plated AOCS Approved Copper Round is a gold-plated strike on 1 troy oz of .999 fine copper, carrying the MJB-designed Bitcoin die used across the AOCS-approved Bitcoin line. The obverse depicts the Bitcoin symbol within a circuit-board field, with the legend BITCOIN · DIGITAL · DECENTRALIZED · PEER TO PEER and 1 TROY OZ .999 FINE COPPER · MJB MONETARY METALS. The reverse continues the circuit motif around a chip bearing AOCS APPROVED, the designer’s initials MJB, and the year 2013.
On the copper strikes, the obverse rim carries the copper fineness and the MJB Monetary Metals name, and AOCS APPROVED moves to the reverse chip. On the 2016 silver strikes, AOCS APPROVED appears on the obverse rim instead. The design is credited to Michael “Mick” Bruce, whose UK venture, MJB Monetary Metals, is named on the coin. The same 2013 copper strike is also documented in plain copper and silver-plated finishes.

2013 Bitcoin Gold-Plated AOCS Approved Copper Round – Authentication
Genuine: Solid .999 copper, 1 troy oz (31.1 g), 39 mm, 3 mm thick, with a reeded edge. Non-magnetic. Wear on the rim or high points shows pink copper beneath the plating.
Known copies: Iron-core pieces in gold, silver, and copper finishes, widely sold at wholesale. Some carry the full MJB legend from a faithful copy of the die; others alter the legend (e.g., VIRTUAL CURRENCY · PEER TO PEER).
Tells:
- From a photo: soft or filled lettering, merged circuit traces, lost pad detail, a thin edge profile, or gray metal showing through the plating.
- In hand: attraction to a magnet, a weight well under 31 g (copies documented at 14.7–24.3 g), or a thickness under 3 mm.
A correct legend alone does not establish authenticity.
