The obverse depicts Hiawatha standing upright in a canoe, arms outstretched to either side, each hand gripping a bundle of rooted plants that hang loosely below his fists. He wears a simple headband with trailing hair and a draped garment gathered at the waist. Two serpentine forms curl near his feet inside the canoe, and the vessel sits low against a rippled water line that carries a faint reflection beneath it. The word "HIAWATHA" arches along the upper rim in raised block lettering.

The reverse carries the generic design AMC used across the entire Mythological Legends line: a brooding, face-like cloud formation fills the upper field, with a jagged bolt of lightning and streaks of falling rain beneath it. A cresting wave occupies the lower half of the design. The series title "MYTHOLOGICAL LEGENDS" is struck in stylized lettering across the center, breaking the line of falling rain, and the legend "1 OZ. .999 FINE SILVER MADE BY AMC" runs along the bottom rim.

1987 Hiawatha AMC Mythological Legends Overview

The Hiawatha round is one of seven individual designs issued in the American Medallion Corporation’s Mythological Legends series, alongside Angel of the Gods, Eros, Mermaids of the Sea, Vampire, Voodoo, and Werewolf. Each design paired a distinct legendary or mythological figure on the obverse with the same storm-and-wave reverse and series branding, giving the set a unified look across otherwise unrelated subjects drawn from Native American, Greek, and folkloric tradition.

The obverse subject, Hiawatha, is a precolonial Native American leader remembered as a co-founder of the Iroquois Confederacy, the political alliance that united the Onondaga, Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, and Oneida nations under a shared system of governance known as the Great Law of Peace. Accounts differ on whether Hiawatha was born Onondaga or Mohawk, with some traditions holding that he was born into one nation and later adopted into the other. Working alongside the Great Peacemaker, Hiawatha is credited as a skilled orator who helped persuade the five nations to set aside generations of conflict and unite, a story that survives today largely through oral tradition rather than contemporary written record. AMC’s choice of Hiawatha for the series places him alongside figures like the Werewolf and Voodoo masks as a “legend” in the broadest sense, even though his story is grounded in documented Indigenous history rather than folklore or horror tradition.

Mint: American Medallion Corporation (AMC) Issuer: Robert E. Westfall Inc. Designer/Engraver: Unidentified — no designer or engraver credit has been located for this round

This round carries no struck date, and no dated examples, AMC catalogs, or original sales literature establishing a release date have been located. The Texas Stacker follows its site convention of attributing Mythological Legends rounds to 1987, tied to the documented corporate transition from Texas International Mint to American Medallion Corporation that occurred in that year and the appearance of the “AMC” mark used on this piece. This is an attribution rather than a certainty, offered pending discovery of contemporary documentation establishing an exact release date. The spelled-out “MADE BY AMC” legend on the reverse satisfies this site’s Mint Mark standard on its own; its presence is not treated as evidence for or against a specific striking year.

1987 Hiawatha AMC Mythological Legends Notes

  • No mintage figures for this round have been documented.
  • Numista lists this design with a rarity index of 95 out of 100 among cataloged member collections, indicating a scarce piece relative to other exonumia in the catalog.
  • The measured diameter on this example (30.30 mm) is smaller than the 39.0 mm Numista lists for this design; noted here pending re-verification rather than silently resolved in favor of either figure.
