The design is a close copy of Mexico’s official Libertad onza — itself derived from the reverse of the 1921 gold Centenario commemorating the centennial of Mexican independence — paired with an eagle-and-serpent obverse evoking the national coat of arms. It was issued as one of several Mexican-themed replica rounds produced in 1987, alongside companion pieces such as the Caballito and Sun designs in the same “Viva Mexico” line.

The company operated under the Texas International Mint name only briefly, in 1986 and early 1987, before rebranding to the better-known American Medallion Corporation banner later that year. Rounds from this earlier window carry the “TIM” mint mark rather than the “AMC” mark used on the mint’s subsequent output, making this piece an early-production example from AMC’s short-lived Texas International Mint era.
