The obverse depicts a high-relief bust of General Robert E. Lee facing slightly right. Surrounding inscriptions read GENERAL ROBERT E. LEE and 1807–1870. The lower fields are inscribed 1 TROY OZ and .999 FINE SILVER. No mint mark, designer initials, or copyright notice appear on the coin.

The reverse reproduces the Great Seal of the Confederate States of America, featuring George Washington on horseback surrounded by an agricultural wreath representing the principal crops of the South. Legends include THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA, 22 FEBRUARY 1862, and the Confederate national motto DEO VINDICE ("God Will Vindicate").

This design has circulated since at least 2009, with real multi-year gaps in its early trading history (the longest, over 3 years, ran from 2011 to 2014). Since 2024, however, it has traded very actively - dozens of sales, often clustered just days apart. Worth noting the tag reflects that older historical gap more than the current market, which looks quite liquid right now.

2009 Robert E. Lee Southern Hero Overview
The 2009 Robert E. Lee Southern Hero Silver Round is a privately issued one-ounce .999 fine silver commemorative honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee (1807–1870). Issued as part of the Southern Hero Silver Coin Collection, the round features a high-relief portrait of Lee on the obverse and the historic Great Seal of the Confederate States of America on the reverse. Original educational booklets published by American Lantern Press identify the collection by name but do not identify the issuer or manufacturer. Multiple contemporaneous 2009 seller descriptions attribute manufacture to Northwest Territorial Mint, although no surviving primary mint documentation has been located to confirm that attribution.
2009 Robert E. Lee Southern Hero Attribution
The Robert E. Lee round is one of four documented issues in the Southern Hero Silver Coin Collection, alongside Jefferson Davis, Stonewall Jackson, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Original booklets accompanying the Lee and Jackson issues identify the collection by name and were published by American Lantern Press under its Independent Living imprint. Although the booklets do not identify the mint, multiple independent marketplace listings from April through July 2009 describe the rounds as newly minted by Northwest Territorial Mint (or “Northwest Mint”) for a southern-based organization. These contemporaneous descriptions provide strong secondary evidence for the mint attribution, but no surviving manufacturer or distributor documentation has been located to confirm it.
2009 Robert E. Lee Southern Hero Notes
Unlike the 2002 Confederate Silver Dollar designed by Henri Klingler, this round belongs to a separate commemorative program focused on individual Confederate leaders. Despite sharing the Great Seal reverse, the two issues differ in portrait style, production characteristics, marketing, and documented provenance. Based on currently available evidence, the Southern Hero Silver Coin Collection appears to consist of four portrait rounds, with no additional subjects documented.
